Frequently asked questions
Most frequent questions and answers
Can I volunteer? What about groups? Do I need experience?
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please download and return a Volunteer Application, and we will be in touch to explain what opportunities exist. We often have groups volunteer one time or on a repeating basis. You don’t need cooking experience either- you’ll learn ‘on the job’!
I'm interested in volunteering. How much time is involved?
We start preparing the day’s meal at 9AM, and we serve lunch at noon. Cleanup usually takes another hour or so, and we are typically done by 1:30PM. Some volunteers stay the entire time, others just for a few hours.
Can I donate food? Can we organize a food drive for you?
Who can come for a meal? How much does it cost?
We can accept unexpired nonperishable food, and a moderate amount of perishable food. PLEASE CONTACT US TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ALL FOOD DONATIONS. If the food is from a catered event, we can accept your donation if the food has not been opened or started. WE CANNOT ACCEPT FOOD PREPARED IN PRIVATE KITCHENS. If you would like to organize a food drive, please refer to our donation ‘wishlist‘ for the items we use most.
ANYONE! No questions asked, no requirements, no obligation. There is never a charge for a meal.
Are you really a charitable organization?
The Hands of Hope Kitchen is a 501c3 registered public charity. All donations are fully tax-deductible. We are also 100% volunteer led and run. All donations go toward food and operational expenses. There is no salary expense.
Can I get a 'take-out' meal? Do you deliver?
Due to NYS DOH regulations, we do not offer take-out or delivery service. In most circumstances, we cannot allow food to be taken home either.
